Culinary architect David Diffendorfer erects an elaborate gingerbread palace every year in the middle of the lobby of downtown’s Benson Hotel, and getting an eyeful of his handiwork can inject you with a surprisingly effective dose of Christmas cheer.

Originally known as the New Oregon Hotel, The Benson Hotel was soon re-named in honor of Simon Benson, one of early Portland’s noted lumber barons, philanthropists and visionaries. Benson commissioned the city’s most prominent architect of the day, Albert E. Doyle of the firm Doyle and Patterson, to design the facility. Benson wanted to build a grand hotel for Portland that features the distinctive style of restraint and proportion reflected during the early 20th century.
Hotel 116 is located on the east side of Interstate 405 which means that not only do you have convenient commuting access, but you are also close to everything Bellevue has to offer – from business centers to shopping, from parks to museums. And perhaps most importantly for me, you’re away from the traffic grid surrounding Bellevue Square.
While visiting the Seattle Southside, we stayed at the Coast Gateway Hotel. The hotel is so close to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport that you could almost reach out and touch it. If seeing planes take off and land while you are relaxing in your hotel room doesn't spark your Wanderlust, not much else will!
After a day of museums, shopping, and great food, you need a comfortable place to recharge and relax. Hotel 116, formerly the Coast Bellevue Hotel, is just that place. Hotel 116 is newly remodeled with mid century modern flair and is located off the freeway near the Meydenbauer Center. Since there aren't good walkways available from Old Bellevue to the hotel, I was happy to find that they offer a shuttle service to any location within 5 miles of the property, which can get you to just about all of the Bellevue attractions.
In 1913, lumber baron Simon Benson opened the Benson Hotel in downtown Portland, and it seems he enjoyed his hotel so much, he hasn’t left! Rumor has it that Simon can be seen coming down the grand staircase dressed in his best dark suit, and sometimes knocks over cocktails in the Palm Court in the hotel’s lobby. In addition to Simon, former guests who couldn’t bear to leave the hotel and whose spirits have been seen roaming the hallways are those of a little boy and a woman in a dress.
The islands’ sugar plantation heyday from the late 1800s to the mid-1900s is credited with sparking Hawaii’s modern cultural mix. At Waimea Plantation Cottages, on the former season grounds of a sugar mill, restored workers’ homes– some more than a century old–serve as bungalow-style accommodations, with lounge-worthy lanais and period details such as claw-foot tubs and rattan furniture.

Sleepy Waimea town, in western Kauai 20 miles from the resorts in Poipu, is a remote but ideal base for exploring Waimea Canyon (the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific”), the Kalalau Overlook atop the green wrinkles of the Na Pali Coast and the quaint towns of Koloa and Hanapepe. I hit Kauai’s red dirt roads on a solo adventure spanning three days and two nights in late July and early August.
SUMMER VACATIONS... come in many flavors, but a studio tour is a classic must-do for fans of classic television shows and films. Tours are available all year long at places like Warner Bros. Studios and Universal Studios Hollywood, which offers its famous backlot drive-around, but you're more likely to see families making the trip to Burbank and Universal City during the school break (not to mention those people who equate summertime with the ideal moment for a vacation).

The Waimea Plantation Cottages perched along the sea provided the perfect respite from other people's. offspring. Each morning roosters and red-faced cardinals greeted us on the back porch overlooking the grey lava sand beach–the perfect place for a light jog, meditation and early morning writing.
More than 50 simply but graciously restored cottages and larger homes from the Garden Island’s early 20th century plantation era stand within this 30-acre oceanfront compound on the quiet West Side, shaded by numerous palms, Norfolk pines, and other tropical trees. The Waimea Plantation Cottages' driftwood-lined, dark-sand beach isn’t swimmable, but guests have a head start on the winding drives to nearby attractions such as Waimea Canyon, Kokee State Park, and miles-long Polihale Beach.

Like a grand old wine and despite its age, The Benson, a Coast hotel, is still one of Portland's best hotels and certainly something not to miss if you like to see the real Portland. Fans of Downton Abbey will love it as it is period correct.
It’s no surprise that we’ve been on the road a lot lately. It’s generally what we enjoy doing, but most recently we’ve been touring our state of California for our oldest daughter. As a senior in high school, she has applied to universities with a plan to major in Dance. With this major also comes the added application requirement of having to audition for placement in the programs. A weekend to UC Irvine and UC Santa Barbara had us down in southern California and we were thrilled to partner with West Beach Inn right across the street from Santa Barbara’s harbor.
Situated on the southernmost point of Puget Sound, about an hour’s drive from Seattle and two hours from Portland, the town of Olympia, Washington, offers a convenient meeting location. With its role as the state’s capital, appealing waterfront setting and proximity to Mount Rainier and Olympic National Park, many consider it an ideal Northwest getaway.

Coast Bellevue Hotel’s new name, Hotel 116, comes as part of a $2 million renovation project designed by Seattle-based GGLO and renovated by Lynden-based contractor Elements Hospitality. In addition to the new name — and its accompany signage, which went up on Friday — updates to the 176-room property include exterior improvements,
Since Coast Hotels USA took over management of Waimea Plantation Cottages in July 2014, occupancy and revenue have increased significantly.

Let me tell you about my vision of paradise. Palm trees swaying in the breeze, a stunning view of the ocean, a pool to cool of in, and accommodations that make me feel both at home and a million miles from the ordinary...I recently found paradise west side of Kauai during my stay at Coast Hotels Waimea Plantation Cottages.
Number 8: Waimea Plantation Cottages
Once you lay eyes on your cute little cottage that's been rescued from a shuttered sugarcane plantation, spruced up, and set here in a grassy coconut grover, your guidebook of Kauai's must-see sights doesn't stand a chance.
The closest hotel to the historic district, Coast Wenatchee Center Hotel makes a perfect Wenatchee home base. Its 147 rooms, some of which are pet-friendly, come with a handy minifridge and Starbucks coffee. The indoor-outdoor pool is a hit with families. The property’s ninth-floor Rivertop Bar & Grill boasts mountain and water views to accompany tasty tapas and American fare. Business travelers like its location right next to the convention center, which is accessible via skywalk.
If you're looking for something that's off the normal tourist radar but still well located, consider the Waimea Plantation Cottages in the small town of Waimea. Despite its location at the base of Waimea Canyon – one of the island's most popular attractions – it remains exptremely local, especially after dark, with most tourists making camp in Hanalei, Princeville, Kapaa, and Poipu.
